The Way to Treasure Island by Lizzy Stewart
The Way to Treasure Island by Lizzy Stewart
Russell’s Book of the Month for September
This charming tale, written and illustrated by Lizzy Stewart, shows us how to appreciate the sometimes frustrating and annoying differences between people…especially when that really annoying person is your own dad!
Matilda is very sensible, likes to follow instructions and does not stray too much from the path, whereas her chaotic dad is the complete opposite. So when Matilda shows him a very special treasure map at the beach one day and they decide to go off to hunt for it together, their joint adventure doesn’t go quite as planned..
This is definitely a book for anyone who knows somebody who is independently minded, impulsive and free-spirited and how people like this can be frustrating at times. But it is also about how, because they look at the world in a different way, they can show you things you don’t normally see, potentially giving you a happier and enriched life.
Now, I’m sure that many would get quite angry at the father’s somewhat random parental behaviour in this story (and be tempted to call Social Services on him!). But as their adventure progresses and the magic of the natural world opens up to them, we get to appreciate both of their diverse personalities and how Matilda and her dad have been complementing each other in their family life up to now. How two opposites can make a good whole.
It’s a brilliant thoughtful read and the colourful illustrations look amazing. Russell could relate as he is a ‘Matilda’ at heart as he’s always keeping us in check.
This is quite deep stuff and is another Gobbledybooks steal at just £2.50.
