Russell’s Book of the Month for March is ‘Meet the Moomins’

The Moomins used to be a well guarded secret many moons gone by, among those of us were charmed by Tove Jansson’s original tales and wonderful comic strips. Then, it seemed, like Harry Potter, Mr Men and Winnie the Pooh before it, the commercial floodgates opened and the Film & TV tie-ins, the products, theme parks and experiences were suddenly everywhere and the original works became lost in the massive cocktail mix of BIG MERCH!

The one thing that sets Moomins products apart from most of the other literary cash-ins though, is the fact that some careful thought has clearly gone into a lot of them. The annual Moomins Advent Calendar, for instance, is a beautifully designed thing to be cherished at Christmas. The Moomin Range from Oxfam are mostly, well-made sustainable items and the expanded book range really has the feeling that the people behind it really understood the core of what the Moomins stood for.

Which brings us to this PUSH PULL SLIDE board book based on the acclaimed Moominvalley animated series, (in itself a lovingly crafted tv series) with the book’s images taken directly from the series. The board books are weighty and have a real quality to them, the mechanics are well designed and all work really well.

All in all, this fab little book would make a great gift or would be perfect for reading to any toddler or preschooler.
